Pothole Repair
HOW ARE POTHOLES FIXED?
Potholes are a natural result of aging pavement and seasonal weather changes and occur occasionally in even the most well built streets. The Street Department staff provide for the safety of the traveling public by making both temporary and permanent pothole repairs.
Temporary Repairs:
When a pothole is reported, the street department is dispatched to clean the hole of any debris and then fill the pothole with compacted asphalt. Temporary pothole repair prevents water from causing further damage to the pavement and is done when there are a large number of potholes, which need to be repaired quickly to keep the traveling public safe. Later a permanent repair of the pothole may be scheduled.
Permanent Repairs:
To permanently repair a pothole, the hole is excavated and a square is cut out of the pavement surrounding the hole. All loose material is removed, the hole is dried and liquid asphalt is applied to the surface of the excavated hole to aid in the bonding between the new and old asphalt pavement. The pothole is then filled with asphalt and properly compacted. Permanent pothole repairs extend the useful life of the pavement.
Base Failure Repair
Base Failures, or cave-ins, are the result of water damage from above or below the surface of the street. Base failure repair is performed, by excavating the failed area of the pavement and removing any wet and unusable material until a solid, dry surface is reached. The base of the street is then built up in layers to an appropriate depth before the asphalt surface is replaced. This type of repair prevents further deterioration to the street and restores the even riding surface of the street.
Concrete Restoration
The City of Lake Worth maintains both asphalt and concrete streets within its jurisdiction. If there are sections of a road that have failed sections then the Street Department will cut and remove that section and replace it with new concrete.
Drainage Maintenance
In response to citizen or staff notification, the field crew investigates storm drain systems. If the system is clogged with debris, crews may clean the system by hand or use machinery to remove debris from the inlet and restore appreciate storm water flow.
In creek areas the Street Department, cleans and clears all debris so that water will flow properly. During the process of cleaning the creek areas the city receives persons from the Tarrant County Labor Detail to assist in clean debris.
Emergency Services
During City emergencies such as ice storms, flooding and other natural disaster, the Street Department works closely with the City’s Emergency Management, Fire and Police Department to provide for the safety of the citizens and visitors. The Street Department is responsible for setting up barricades on the streets during flooding as well as sanding street and major intersections during ice storms. The Public Works Department works often clear trees and debris from roadways after major storms.
