Charbonneau Park, one of the City of Lake Worth’s new neighborhood parks, is home of the “Growing Up Strong: Kids and Trees” project. The community project was developed by the City of Lake Worth, in cooperation with the Northwest Tarrant Chamber, the Lake Worth ISD and more than 80 business and community volunteers.
In addition to planting trees in Charbonneau Park, the project provides mentoring opportunities as community volunteers “adopt” elementary classes in Lake Worth. “Kids and Trees” participants have assisted students in park activities including tree planting and identification, nature projects and environmental education. More that 300 Effie Morris Elementary second graders have participated in the project since it began in 2001.
The long-term benefits to the residents of Lake Worth include improved parks, new business-education partnerships, as well as increased volunteerism in the community. In addition, the program provides an innovative method of teaching young students “real-life” educational experiences outside the classroom.
