Strategic Traffic Operations

The STOPS Course is a complete and comprehensive look at the traditional vehicle stop process. Officers will learn why the proper vehicle stop protocol is important and how to remain professional and effective throughout the duration of that stop. Officers will learn how to maintain their safety while reducing stress and conflict with the violator, increasing the impact of the stop while reducing citizen complaints. Attendees will realize the true costs of crashes on their communities and the importance of how vehicle stops can change driving behavior, reduce crashes, and deter criminal behavior.

STOPS is grant funded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and will be instructed by the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA).

Course Information

The training will offer 4 hours of TCOLE credit and after this class individuals will be able to:
• Effectively conduct a vehicle stop
• Understand the case law that directly relates to stopping vehicles and officer limitations
• Understand the lasting effects of traffic law enforcement
• Understand the 7 step violator contact.
